Help us give $100,000 to YOUR favorite organizations
Instead of Abacus donating to our favorite causes, we came up with a way to improve your practice while making you a hero in your community. You pick the cause, you write the check and you take credit for the donation and we’ll reimburse you with a credit up to 2% on your Abacus purchases. For every thousand dollars you spend with Abacus, give twenty dollars to your local cause and we’ll credit your account.
How to participate
Within 100 days of your Abacus purchase, provide us with the proof of your donation. If your contribution includes publication of your firm’s information, we’d like you to include the AbacusLaw logo and wording similar to “We use AbacusLaw technology to help us provide the very best service to our clients.” And we’ll feature your donation on our website with a link back to yours. We’re glad to help you support your causes.

AbacusLaw Tip of the Month
How to Backup & Restore Your AbacusLaw Data
It is a good practice to backup your files every day in order to avoid data loss due to unforeseen circumstances such a power surges or computer errors. AbacusLaw has an internal utility that allows you to backup and restore your files daily (or whenever you see fit).
To back up your data, go to File/Utilities/Backup/Backup. From the “destination” button, choose where you want to save your data. (We recommend that you save data to a removable media such as a flash drive or a storage device independent of AbacusLaw). Click “Start Backup” and your data will be saved to wherever you assigned it.
To restore your data, you need be the only one logged into AbacusLaw and do so as an Administrator. Go to File/Utilities/Backup/Restore. Make sure your source file, the location of the data you wish to restore, is correct. Check the “all practice management data” box under “restore data files for”. (We recommend you restore all data instead of checking only select boxes in order to avoid possible data corruption). Click the “Restore” button in both the restore setup window and the select files to restore window and Abacus will restore your data.

| For Your Practice
Year-End Accounting is Easy with AbacusLaw
If you have a current Practice Protection Plan you are entitled to watch our pre-recorded Year End Accounting webinar at no cost. This one hour event is presented by our legal accounting expert, Perri Lafferty. You’ll learn what needs to be done to ensure the smoothest close possible. You can watch the video here: http://downloads.abacuslaw.com/downloads/yearendaccounting/
Here are two important points to keep in mind when preparing your year-end accounting.
- Do not close your Abacus accounting year until your tax accountant has filed your company's taxes. In all likelihood you will receive closing journal entries from your accountant that should be entered before closing your books.
- Print the following reports before you leave your office on December 30, 2011:
A) The Accounts Receivable Reports, under Billing > Accounts Receivable
B) The Accounts Payable Report, under A/P > Accounts Payable Reports > A/P-Cash Requirements Report
C) The Work in Process Reports, under Reports > Productivity
Abacus wishes you a great finish to your 2011 business year, and a happy and healthy 2012.

New Rulings: Using Cloud Solutions like Abacus Sky is Ethical for Law Firms
As with any new technology for lawyers, the rise of cloud computing has brought ethical and security concerns to the forefront of everyone’s mind. Two recent opinions by State Bar Associations show that using the cloud to store information in law firms (e.g. Abacus Sky) is both acceptable and ethical.
The recent Opinion by the Pennsylvania Bar Association says that lawyers may ethically use the cloud to store confidential client data as long as they take precautions to assure that (1) all such materials remain confidential, and (2) reasonable safeguards are employed to ensure that the data is protected from breaches, data loss and other risks.
Earlier this year The North Carolina State Bar Association published an opinion in favor of the use of cloud computing for law firms. They recently revised their opinion, removing all specific security requirements (since technology and security are constantly changing) instead, requiring “due diligence and frequent and regular education”.
Abacus Sky provides professional, state-of-the-art security measures including:
- SAS70 Type II data center (in Minneapolis, MN)
- 24x7 closed-circuit video surveillance
- 24x7 secure facility access
- 24x7 unauthorized access monitoring (aka “hacker attempts”)
- 128-bit encryption and Dual WatchGuard XTM 5 Firewalls
