"Carriers seek to insure firms that present a low risk of malpractice claims...
Insurers look for effective calendaring and docket control systems."
- Mark Bassingthwaighte (ABA Journal)
Vicki Davidson of ALPS wrote, "In past studies done by the ABA, nearly 20% of malpractice claims involve missed deadlines or administrative errors. Implementation of a docket control and calendaring system may not prevent a legal malpractice claim from happening. However, effective risk management and loss prevention procedures can reduce the likelihood of a claim arising as well as improve the practice's proficiency and legal services provided to your clients "
The ALPS recommends AbacusLaw as a software system designed to specifically meet the needs of law firms. "AbacusLaw Gold is the ultimate front office and back office practice management system. Integrated time and billing, trust accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll are all included, with direct support from Abacus "

Don't Get Caught In the Malpractice Zone!
In the Himalayas it's called the Death Zone - a point past which the
air is too thin to sustain living tissue. Stay up there too long and
your body begins to die.
In law practice there's a similar kind of danger - the Malpractice Zone. If you're working at the edge of control, then sooner or later you'll make a mistake - forget a phone call, miss a deadline, lose a document.
Experienced climbers use expert gear to keep them out of the danger zone. Experienced attorneys do too: practice management software. [Read more]

Docket Science By Susan E. Davis, California
Lawyer
At least 50 percent of all malpractice claims lodged against lawyers
arise from calendaring mistakes, according to Polk Communications and
Research. In a 1991 survey the company found that about two-thirds of
the surveyed insurance companies offered premium reductions for firms
with automatic calendaring programs. The reductions ranged from about
2 percent to 10 percent. Three companies said they wouldn't insure a
law firm without docketing software.
The Risks and Rewards of Calendaring for Small
Firms By
Joseph C. Scott, Valley Lawyer
For most attorneys and staff, tracking down court dates, properly entering
them into the firm calendar and regularly checking those dates is a
lengthy and tedious process...As lawyers know all too well, the ramifications
of missing a court date can be devastating to the client's case. And
anything that negatively impacts the client can also cause significant
issues for the attorney and the firm involved in the case. In the
worst case scenario, a judge could toss out a case, which can promptly
lead the client to file a malpractice lawsuit. In the "best-case" scenario,
a missed deadline is embarrassing to lawyers and reflects badly on
their clients. In one case, a San Francisco law firm missed a court
deadline by a full month because of an error in calculating a deadline;
a calendaring clerk thought the firm had 60 days to file an appeal,
when the deadline was actually 30 days.
Law Firm Malpractice Premiums on the Rise By
Anthony Lin, New York Law Journal
Insurers' incentives changed when the stock market began to dip in 2000,
said Davis, and have moved even further in the direction of higher premiums
since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, as the related payouts and concern
about future catastrophes have put greater pressure on the pool of insurance
funds. --- AbacusLaw can help you lower your premium in tough economic
times!
Minimize
Risk with Better Calendar Management
Malpractice claims are filed for a variety of reasons, but the
leading cause is missed court deadlines. Missing a deadline is, as
the Ninth Circuit called it in one ruling, a 'lawyer's nightmare.'
... Despite the danger of missing or miscalculating a court deadline,
it happens. In fact, what may be surprising is that it does not happen
more often. Many law firms rely on paper calendars ... Others lack
a centralized court calendaring system and allow each attorney to use
his or her own methods. All of these leave law firms vulnerable to
missing court dates. Without an automated, ... centralized system,
court calendaring can be tedious, time-consuming, and painfully prone
to errors.
